Juz 06
(4:148 – 5:81)
4:148
Allāh does not like the public utterance of evil speech, unless it is by one who has been wronged. And Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
4:149
Whether you reveal a good deed or conceal it, or pardon an evil deed—indeed, Allāh is Ever-Pardoning, All-Powerful.
4:150
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allāh and His messengers, and wish to make a distinction between Allāh and His messengers, saying, “We believe in some and disbelieve in others,” seeking a middle way—
4:151
it is they who are truly disbelievers. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
4:152
But those who believe in Allāh and His messengers and make no distinction between any of them, they will be granted their rewards. And Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
4:153
The People of the Scripture ask you ˹O Prophet˺ to bring down for them a book from the heaven. They asked Moses for something far greater than that, saying, “Show us Allāh clearly.” So the thunderbolt struck them for their injustice. Then they took the calf ˹for worship˺ after clear signs had come to them, yet We forgave that, and gave Moses a clear authority.
4:154
And We raised the Mount ˹Sinai˺ over them as a pledge, and We said to them, “Enter the gate ˹of the city˺ in humility,” and We commanded them, “Do not violate the Sabbath.” And We took from them a solemn covenant.
4:155
Then We cursed them for breaking their covenant, their rejection of Allāh’s signs, their killing of the prophets unjustly, and their saying, “Our hearts are sealed.” Rather, Allāh has sealed them for their disbelief, so they do not believe, except for a few.
4:156
And ˹We cursed them˺ for their disbelief and their outrageous slander against Mary.
4:157
And for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allāh.” But they neither killed him nor crucified him—it was only made to appear so to them. Those who disagree are certainly in doubt about him. They have no knowledge of him—nothing but conjecture. They certainly did not kill him.
4:158
Rather, Allāh raised him up to Himself. And Allāh is Almighty, All-Wise.
4:159
There is none among the People of the Scripture but will certainly believe in him ˹Jesus˺ before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.
4:160
Because of the wrongdoings of the Jews, We forbade them good things that had been lawful for them, and for their hindering many from the path of Allāh.
4:161
And ˹We forbade them good things˺ for their taking interest, although they had been forbidden it, and for consuming people’s wealth unjustly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
4:162
But those among them who are firmly grounded in knowledge and the believers—they believe in what has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ and what was revealed before you, as well as those who establish prayer, pay zakāh (alms-tax), and believe in Allāh and the Last Day. It is they to whom We will grant a magnificent reward.
4:163
We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. We also revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes ˹of Israel˺, and Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon. And We gave David the Zaboor (Psalms).
4:164
And ˹We sent˺ messengers We have told you about before, and messengers We have not told you about. And Allāh spoke to Moses directly.
4:165
These messengers were sent as bearers of good news and as warners, so that humanity would have no argument against Allāh after the messengers ˹have come˺. And Allāh is Almighty, All-Wise.
4:166
But Allāh bears witness to what He has revealed to you—He has revealed it with His knowledge. And the angels ˹too˺ bear witness. And sufficient is Allāh as a Witness.
4:167
Indeed, those who disbelieve and bar ˹others˺ from the path of Allāh have certainly gone far astray.
4:168
Indeed, those who disbelieve and commit wrongdoing—Allāh will neither forgive them nor guide them to any path,
4:169
except the path of Hell, where they will remain forever. And that is easy for Allāh.
4:170
O humanity! The Messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord, so believe—it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, then ˹know that˺ to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. And Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
4:171
O People of the Scripture! Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say about Allāh except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger of Allāh, and His Word, which He delivered to Mary, and a spirit created by Him. So believe in Allāh and His messengers and do not say, “Three ˹Gods˺.” Stop—it is better for you. Allāh is only One God. Far is He above having a son! To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as a Guardian.
4:172
The Messiah would never disdain to be a servant of Allāh, nor would the nearest angels. And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant—He will gather them all together before Him.
4:173
As for those who believe and do good deeds, He will pay them their full reward and increase it for them out of His grace. But as for those who disdain and are arrogant, He will punish them with a painful punishment, and they will find no guardian or helper besides Allāh.
4:174
O humanity! A conclusive proof has come to you from your Lord, and We have sent down to you a brilliant Light (the Qur'an).
4:175
As for those who believe in Allāh and hold firmly to Him, He will admit them into His mercy and grace, and guide them to Him upon a straight path.
4:176
They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ for a ruling. Say, “Allāh gives you a ruling concerning al-kalālah (a person who dies leaving neither parents nor children): If a man dies and leaves no child, but has a sister, she is to receive half of the inheritance. And he will inherit from her if she leaves no child. If there are two sisters, they are to receive two-thirds of the inheritance. If there are siblings, both men and women, then the share of the male is equal to the portion of two females.” Allāh makes ˹this˺ clear to you so that you do not go astray. And Allāh is All-Knowing of everything.
5:1
O believers! Honour your commitments. Livestock animals are lawful for you, except what is specified ˹later˺, but do not consider game lawful while you are in the state of iḥrām (consecration for pilgrimage). Indeed, Allāh decrees what He wills.
5:2
O believers! Do not violate the sanctity of the rites of Allāh, nor the sacred month, nor the sacrificial animals, nor the garlands ˹marking them˺, nor those coming to the Sacred House seeking the bounty and pleasure of their Lord. But once you are out of the state of iḥrām, you may hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people, who once prevented you from ˹visiting˺ the Sacred Mosque, lead you to aggression. Cooperate with one another in righteousness and mindfulness ˹of Allāh˺, and do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And be mindful of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is severe in punishment.
5:3
Forbidden to you is carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that over which any name other than that of Allāh has been invoked, and that which has been strangled, or beaten to death, or fallen from a height, or gored to death, and that which has been partially eaten by a wild animal—unless you purify it ˹by slaughtering it properly˺ before its death—and that which is sacrificed on stone altars, and that you seek divination through drawing lots. That is a grave transgression. Today, the disbelievers have given up all hope of ˹destroying˺ your religion. So do not fear them; fear Me! Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen for you Islam as your religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger and is not intentionally inclining to sin—then surely Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
5:4
They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ what is lawful for them. Say, “All good things are lawful for you, as well as ˹game caught by˺ the trained hunting animals you use for hunting—training them according to what Allāh has taught you. So eat what they catch for you, but mention the Name of Allāh over it. And be mindful of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is swift in reckoning.”
5:5
Today, all good things have been made lawful for you. The food of the People of the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Lawful for you in marriage are the chaste women from among the believers and the chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you—provided you give them their dowries, acting properly and not promiscuously, nor taking secret lovers. And whoever rejects faith, their efforts will be fruitless, and in the Hereafter, they will be among the losers.
5:6
O believers! When you rise to perform prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and ˹wash˺ your feet up to the ankles. And if you are in a state of major impurity, purify yourselves ˹by bathing˺. But if you are ill or on a journey or have relieved yourselves or have been intimate with women and find no water, then use clean earth, wiping your faces and hands with it. Allāh does not want to burden you, but desires to purify you and complete His favour upon you, so that you may be grateful.
5:7
And remember Allāh’s favour upon you, and His covenant with which He bound you when you said, “We hear and obey.” So be mindful of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh knows best what is in the hearts.
5:8
O believers! Stand firm for Allāh as just witnesses, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just, for that is closer to piety. And be mindful of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.
5:9
Allāh has promised those who believe and do good deeds forgiveness and a magnificent reward.
5:10
But those who disbelieve and reject Our revelations—it is they who will be the residents of the Blazing Fire.
5:11
O believers! Remember Allāh’s favour upon you when a group intended to stretch their hands against you, but He restrained their hands from you. So be mindful of Allāh, and in Allāh let the believers put their trust.
5:12
Allāh certainly took a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We appointed twelve leaders from among them. And Allāh said, “I am with you. If you establish prayer, pay zakāh, believe in My messengers, support them, and lend to Allāh a good loan, I will certainly forgive your sins and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow. But whoever among you disbelieves after this, they have certainly strayed from the straight path.”
5:13
So, for their breaking of their covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort the words ˹of the Torah˺ from their contexts, and they abandoned a portion of what they were reminded of. And you ˹O Prophet˺ will never cease to discover deceit from them, except for a few. But pardon them and overlook ˹their misdeeds˺. Indeed, Allāh loves those who are good in deeds.
5:14
And from those who say, “We are Christians,” We also took their covenant, but they abandoned a portion of what they were reminded of. So We instilled among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection, and Allāh will inform them of what they used to do.
5:15
O People of the Scripture! Our Messenger has come to you, clarifying for you much of what you have been concealing of the Scripture, and overlooking much. A Light has certainly come to you from Allāh, and a clarifying Book (the Qur'an),
5:16
with which Allāh guides those who follow His pleasure to the ways of peace, brings them out of darkness into light by His will, and guides them to a straight path.
5:17
Certainly, those disbelieved who said, “Allāh is the Messiah, son of Mary.” Say, “Who then could prevent Allāh at all if He intended to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone on earth?” To Allāh belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills. And Allāh is over all things All-Powerful.
5:18
The Jews and the Christians say, “We are the children of Allāh and His beloved ones.” Say, “Then why does He punish you for your sins?” Rather, you are only human beings among those He created. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And to Allāh belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and to Him is the final return.
5:19
O People of the Scripture! Our Messenger has come to you, clarifying things for you after a pause in the succession of messengers, so that you cannot say, “No bearer of good news or warner has come to us.” Now, a bearer of good news and a warner has come to you. And Allāh is over all things All-Powerful.
5:20
And ˹remember˺ when Moses said to his people, “O my people! Recall Allāh’s favour upon you when He appointed prophets among you, made you kings, and granted you what He had not granted to anyone else in the world ˹at that time˺.”
5:21
“O my people! Enter the Holy Land which Allāh has ordained for you, and do not turn back ˹fearing the enemy˺, for then you will turn into losers.”
5:22
They said, “O Moses! In that land are a powerful, tyrannical people, and we will never enter it until they leave. If they leave, then we will enter.”
5:23
Two men from among those who feared ˹Allāh˺—and whom Allāh had favoured—said, “Advance against them through the gate! For if you enter it, you will surely be victorious. And put your trust in Allāh if you are ˹true˺ believers.”
5:24
They responded, “O Moses! We will never enter it as long as they are in it. Go, you and your Lord, and fight! We will stay right here.”
5:25
Moses prayed, “My Lord! I have power only over myself and my brother. So separate us from these rebellious people.”
5:26
Allāh said, “Then the land will be forbidden to them for forty years, during which they will wander the earth ˹aimlessly˺. So do not grieve over the rebellious people.”
5:27
And relate to them ˹O Prophet˺ the true story of Adam’s two sons ˹Cain and Abel˺. When they each offered a sacrifice, the offering of one was accepted while the other’s was not. The latter said, “I will surely kill you.” The former replied, “Allāh only accepts ˹the offerings˺ from the righteous.
5:28
Even if you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out mine to kill you. I truly fear Allāh, the Lord of all worlds.
5:29
I want you to bear the burden of my sin and your sin, becoming one of the residents of the Fire. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.”
5:30
Then his soul prompted him to murder his brother, so he killed him and became one of the losers.
5:31
Then Allāh sent a crow scratching the ground to show him how to cover the corpse of his brother. He cried, “Alas! Was I too helpless to be like this crow and cover the corpse of my brother?” So he became remorseful.
5:32
That is why We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land—it is as if he had killed all of mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as if he had saved all of mankind. And certainly, Our messengers came to them with clear proofs, yet many of them are still exceeding the limits on the earth.
5:33
The recompense of those who wage war against Allāh and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land is only that they be killed, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off from opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is disgrace for them in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will suffer a tremendous punishment.
5:34
Except for those who repent before you overpower them. In that case, know that Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
5:35
O believers! Be mindful of Allāh, seek a way to get closer to Him, and strive hard in His cause, so that you may succeed.
5:36
Indeed, those who disbelieve—if they had all that is on earth, and as much again, to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them. And they will have a painful punishment.
5:37
They will wish to leave the Fire, but they will never leave it. And they will have an enduring punishment.
5:38
As for the thief, male or female, cut off their hands as a recompense for what they committed, and as a deterrent ordained by Allāh. And Allāh is Almighty, All-Wise.
5:39
But whoever repents after their wrongdoing and mends their ways, Allāh will surely accept their repentance. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
5:40
Do you not know that to Allāh belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills. And Allāh is over all things All-Powerful.
5:41
O Messenger! Do not be grieved by those who race quickly into disbelief, such as those who say with their mouths, “We believe,” while their hearts do not believe, and the Jews who eagerly listen to falsehoods and listen to other people who have not come to you. They distort the words ˹of the Torah˺ from their contexts, saying, “If you are given this, accept it, but if you are not given it, then beware!” And whoever Allāh wills to test, you can never help them against Allāh at all. Those are the ones whose hearts Allāh does not intend to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter, they will suffer a tremendous punishment.
5:42
˹They are˺ listeners to falsehood, consumers of illicit gain. So if they come to you, judge between them or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they will not harm you in the least. But if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allāh loves the just.
5:43
But how can they ask you to judge when they have the Torah, in which is Allāh’s judgement? Then they turn away after that. And those are not ˹true˺ believers.
5:44
Indeed, We revealed the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted ˹to Allāh˺ judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and the scribes, because they were entrusted to preserve the Book of Allāh and were witnesses to it. So do not fear people; fear Me! And do not exchange My revelations for a brief gain. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed, then it is they who are the disbelievers.
5:45
And We prescribed for them in it: a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and ˹for wounds,˺ equal retaliation. But whoever waives it as a charity, it will be an atonement for him. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed, then it is they who are the wrongdoers.
5:46
And We sent, following in their footsteps, Jesus, son of Mary, confirming what was before him of the Torah. And We gave him the Gospel, in which was guidance and light and confirmation of what was before it of the Torah—a guidance and an admonition for the righteous.
5:47
So let the People of the Gospel judge by what Allāh has revealed in it. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed, then it is they who are the rebellious transgressors.
5:48
And We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book (the Qur’an) with the truth, confirming what came before it of the Scripture and serving as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed, and do not follow their desires, deviating from the truth that has come to you. For each of you, We have established a law and a clear way. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one single community, but ˹He did not, so˺ that He may test you in what He has given you. So strive in all good deeds. To Allāh you will all return, and He will then inform you of that over which you used to differ.
5:49
And ˹We command˺ you to judge between them by what Allāh has revealed, and do not follow their desires. Beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allāh has revealed to you. If they turn away, then know that Allāh only intends to inflict them with some of their sins. And indeed, many people are rebellious transgressors.
5:50
Do they seek the judgement of the Time of Ignorance? And who is better than Allāh in judgement for a people who are certain in faith?
5:51
O believers! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. And whoever among you takes them as allies will surely be one of them. Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
5:52
Yet you see those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) rushing to them, saying, “We fear a turn of fortune may strike us.” But perhaps Allāh will bring victory or a command from Himself, and then they will become regretful for what they concealed in their hearts.
5:53
And the believers will say, “Are these the ones who swore their strongest oaths by Allāh that they were with you?” Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers.
5:54
O believers! If any of you turn away from their faith, Allāh will bring forth a people whom He loves and who love Him—humble towards the believers, powerful against the disbelievers. They will strive in the cause of Allāh and will not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favour of Allāh; He grants it to whom He wills. And Allāh is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
5:55
Your true allies are only Allāh, His Messenger, and the believers who establish prayer, pay zakāh, and bow down ˹in submission˺.
5:56
And whoever takes Allāh, His Messenger, and the believers as allies—then indeed, it is the party of Allāh who will be victorious.
5:57
O believers! Do not take as allies those who have taken your religion as a mockery and a pastime from among those who were given the Scripture before you and the disbelievers. And be mindful of Allāh, if you are ˹true˺ believers.
5:58
And when you call to prayer, they take it as a mockery and a pastime. That is because they are a people who do not reason.
5:59
Say, “O People of the Scripture! Do you resent us for any reason other than that we believe in Allāh, and what was revealed to us, and what was revealed before, and that most of you are rebellious transgressors?”
5:60
Say, “Shall I inform you of something worse than that as a recompense from Allāh? ˹It is the fate of˺ those whom Allāh has cursed, and with whom He was angered, and from whom He made some into apes and pigs, and those who worshipped false deities ˹Tāghūt˺. Those are in a worse position and further astray from the straight path.”
5:61
When they come to you, they say, “We believe,” yet they enter with disbelief and depart with it. And Allāh knows best what they were concealing.
5:62
And you see many of them rushing into sin, aggression, and consuming illicit gain. Evil indeed is what they used to do.
5:63
Why do the rabbis and the scribes not forbid them from saying sinful words and consuming illicit gain? Evil indeed is what they were perpetrating.
5:64
The Jews say, “Allāh’s hand is chained up ˹from spending˺.” May their own hands be chained up, and may they be cursed for what they said! Rather, both His hands are stretched forth; He spends as He wills. And what has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. And We have cast among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they ignite the fire of war, Allāh extinguishes it. They strive to spread corruption in the land, but Allāh does not love the corruptors.
5:65
If only the People of the Scripture had believed and been righteous, We would have certainly acquitted them of their sins and admitted them to the Gardens of Pleasure.
5:66
And if only they had upheld the Torah and the Gospel and what was revealed to them from their Lord, they would have been given provisions from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them is a moderate community, but many of them—evil is what they do.
5:67
O Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord. If you do not, then you have not delivered His message. And Allāh will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.
5:68
Say, “O People of the Scripture! You have nothing ˹of guidance˺ until you observe the Torah and the Gospel and what has been revealed to you from your Lord.” And what has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.
5:69
Indeed, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the Ṣābi’ūn, and the Christians—whoever ˹truly˺ believes in Allāh and the Last Day and does righteousness—there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
5:70
We certainly took a covenant from the Children of Israel and sent them messengers. Every time a messenger came to them with what their souls did not desire, they either denied some or killed others.
5:71
And they assumed there would be no punishment ˹for their deeds˺, so they became blind and deaf ˹to the truth˺. Then Allāh accepted their repentance. Then again, many of them became blind and deaf. But Allāh is All-Seeing of what they do.
5:72
Certainly, those disbelieved who said, “Allāh is the Messiah, son of Mary.” While the Messiah himself said, “O Children of Israel! Worship Allāh, my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, whoever associates partners with Allāh, then Allāh has forbidden Paradise for them, and their refuge is the Fire. And for the wrongdoers, there will be no helpers.
5:73
Certainly, those disbelieved who said, “Allāh is the third of three ˹gods˺.” But there is no god except the One God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, a painful punishment will surely afflict those who disbelieve among them.
5:74
Will they not turn to Allāh in repentance and ask His forgiveness? For Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
5:75
The Messiah, son of Mary, was no more than a messenger. Many messengers passed away before him. And his mother was a woman of truth. They both used to eat food ˹like all mortals˺. See how We make the signs clear to them, yet see how they are deluded ˹after that˺!
5:76
Say, “Do you worship, instead of Allāh, something that possesses no power to harm or benefit you, while Allāh is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing?”
5:77
Say, “O People of the Scripture! Do not exceed the limits in your religion wrongfully, nor follow the desires of a people who went astray before, misled many, and have strayed from the straight path.”
5:78
Those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel were cursed by the tongue of David and Jesus, son of Mary. This was because they disobeyed and were ˹habitually˺ transgressing.
5:79
They would not forbid one another from the evil they committed. Evil indeed was what they used to do.
5:80
You see many of them taking the disbelievers as allies. Evil is what their souls have put forth for them, for Allāh is displeased with them, and in the punishment they will abide forever.
5:81
If they had believed in Allāh and the Prophet and what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them (the disbelievers) as allies. But many of them are rebellious transgressors.
