Juz 05

(4:24 – 4:147)

4:24

Also forbidden are women already married, except those ˹bondwomen˺ whom your right hands possess. This is Allāh’s decree upon you. Lawful to you are all others beyond these, provided you seek them ˹in marriage˺ with gifts from your property, desiring chastity, not lust. Seeing that you have derived benefit from them, give them their prescribed dowries. There is no blame on you for anything you mutually agree upon after the assignment ˹of the dowry˺. Surely Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

4:25

And whoever among you cannot afford to marry free, believing women, let them marry believing bondwomen from among those your right hands possess. Allāh knows best ˹the state of˺ your faith; you are from one another. So marry them with the permission of their guardians, and give them their dowries equitably, provided they are chaste, neither promiscuous, nor having secret lovers. If they commit indecency after marriage, their punishment is half that of free women. This ˹concession is˺ for those among you who fear falling into sin. But if you endure patiently, it is better for you. And Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4:26

Allāh intends to make clear to you ˹His laws˺ and guide you to the ways of those before you, and to turn to you in forgiveness. And Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

4:27

And Allāh intends to turn to you in forgiveness, but those who follow ˹their base˺ desires wish that you would deviate completely ˹from the Right Path˺.

4:28

Allāh intends to lighten your burden, for humanity was created weak.

4:29

O believers! Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, but rather trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves. Surely Allāh is Ever-Merciful to you.

4:30

And whoever does that out of aggression and injustice, We will surely cast them into a Fire. And that is easy for Allāh.

4:31

If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will absolve you of your lesser misdeeds and admit you into a place of honour ˹in Paradise˺.

4:32

And do not covet what Allāh has granted some of you over others. Men will have a share in what they earn, and women will have a share in what they earn. Rather, ask Allāh for His bounty. Surely Allāh is All-Knowing of everything.

4:33

For everyone We have appointed heirs to what parents and ˹close˺ relatives leave. And as for those you have made a pledge with ˹before Islam˺, give them their due share. Surely Allāh is a Witness over everything.

4:34

Men are the guardians of women, because Allāh has made some of them excel others, and because they spend ˹in support of them˺ from their wealth. So, the righteous women are obedient ˹to Allāh and their husbands˺, guarding in ˹the husband’s˺ absence what Allāh orders them to guard. As for those ˹wives˺ whose defiance you fear, advise them ˹first˺, ˹then˺ refuse to share their beds, and ˹lastly˺ strike them ˹lightly˺. But if they return to obedience, seek no pretext against them. Surely Allāh is Most High, All-Great.

4:35

If you anticipate a split between them ˹the husband and wife˺, appoint a mediator from his family and another from hers. If they desire reconciliation, Allāh will reconcile them. Surely Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Aware.

4:36

Worship Allāh ˹alone˺ and associate no partners with Him. Be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, near neighbours, distant neighbours, close friends, travellers, and those ˹bondpeople˺ in your possession. Surely Allāh does not like those who are proud, boastful—

4:37

those who are stingy and command others to be stingy, and conceal what Allāh has granted them of His bounty. We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.

4:38

And ˹also˺ those who spend their wealth only to be seen by people, and do not believe in Allāh or the Last Day. And whoever takes Satan as an intimate companion—what a terrible companion!

4:39

What harm would have come to them if they had believed in Allāh and the Last Day and donated from what Allāh has provided for them? And Allāh is All-Knowing of them.

4:40

Surely Allāh never wrongs anyone, even by a dharr (atom’s weight). And if it is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from His presence a magnificent reward.

4:41

How will it be when We bring a witness from every nation, and bring you ˹O Prophet˺ as a witness against them all?

4:42

On that Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish that the earth were flattened over them, and they will not be able to conceal anything from Allāh.

4:43

O believers! Do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you know what you are saying, nor in a state of major impurity—unless you are passing through ˹the mosque˺—until you have bathed. But if you are ill, or on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with women and find no water, then use clean earth, wiping your faces and hands ˹with it˺. Surely Allāh is Ever-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

4:44

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They buy misguidance ˹for themselves˺ and want you ˹believers˺ to lose the way.

4:45

And Allāh knows best your enemies. And sufficient is Allāh as a Guardian, and sufficient is Allāh as a Helper.

4:46

Among the Jews are those who distort the words of the Scripture, taking them out of context. They say ˹to the Prophet˺: “We hear and disobey,” and “Hear without listening,” and “Rā‘inā” (an ambiguous term that could mean ‘be considerate of us’ or ‘our shepherd/evil one’) twisting their tongues and mocking the faith. If only they had said, “We hear and obey,” and “Hear us,” and “Look at us,” it would have been better and more upright for them. But Allāh has cursed them for their disbelief, so they do not believe, except for a few.

4:47

O People of the Scripture! Believe in what We have revealed, confirming what you already have, before We erase faces and turn them backwards, or curse them as We cursed the people of the Sabbath. And Allāh’s command is always executed.

4:48

Surely Allāh does not forgive association ˹of partners˺ with Him, but forgives anything else to whoever He wills. And whoever associates partners with Allāh has indeed committed a tremendous sin.

4:49

Have you not seen those who claim purity for themselves? Rather, Allāh purifies whom He wills, and they will not be wronged by ˹even˺ the amount of a thread ˹inside a date seed˺.

4:50

See how they fabricate lies against Allāh! That alone is a blatant sin.

4:51

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They believe in idols and false deities, and say of the disbelievers that they are better guided than the believers.

4:52

It is they whom Allāh has cursed. And whoever Allāh curses, you will never find for him any helper.

4:53

Do they ˹disbelievers˺ have a share in ˹Allāh’s˺ dominion? If so, they would not give others even the slightest amount ˹of power, equivalent to the speck on a date-stone˺.

4:54

Or are they envious of the people for what Allāh has granted them of His bounty? For We have already granted the family of Abraham the Scripture and Wisdom, and granted them a magnificent kingdom.

4:55

Of them ˹the Jews˺ are some who believed in him ˹Muhammad˺, and some who turned away from him. And sufficient is Hell as a blazing fire!

4:56

Surely those who disbelieve in Our revelations, We will soon burn them in the Fire. Whenever their skins are roasted, We will replace them with new skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allāh is Almighty, All-Wise.

4:57

But those who believe and do good deeds, We will admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. There they will have purified spouses, and We will admit them into a vast, protective shade.

4:58

Indeed, Allāh commands you to return trusts to their rightful owners; and when you judge between people, that you judge with justice. Excellent is what Allāh instructs you to do. Surely Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

4:59

O believers! Obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Should you disagree on anything, then refer it to Allāh and the Messenger, if you truly believe in Allāh and the Last Day. This is the best approach and the most fitting outcome.

4:60

Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what has been revealed to you and what was revealed before you? They want to refer ˹their disputes˺ for judgment to the false deities, although they were commanded to reject them. And Satan wants to lead them far astray.

4:61

When they are told, “Come to what Allāh has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.

4:62

How ˹will it be˺ when a disaster strikes them because of what their hands have sent forth? Then they will come to you, swearing by Allāh, “We intended nothing but good and reconciliation.”

4:63

Allāh knows best what is in their hearts. So turn away from them, advise them, and speak to them persuasive words concerning themselves.

4:64

We did not send any messenger except to be obeyed by Allāh’s will. If only they had come to you ˹O Prophet˺ when they wronged themselves, and prayed for Allāh’s forgiveness, and the Messenger prayed for their forgiveness, they would have certainly found Allāh Ever-Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.

4:65

But no, by your Lord, they will not ˹truly˺ believe until they make you ˹O Prophet˺ the judge in all disputes between them, then find no resistance in their hearts whatsoever to your ruling, and submit wholeheartedly.

4:66

If We had commanded them, “Kill yourselves” or “Leave your homes,” none would have done it except a few of them. If they had done what they were instructed, it would have been better for them and would have strengthened them ˹in faith˺.

4:67

And We would have certainly granted them a magnificent reward from Our presence,

4:68

and guided them to the Straight Path.

4:69

And whoever obeys Allāh and the Messenger will be in the company of those whom Allāh has blessed: the prophets, the truly truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. What excellent companions these are!

4:70

That is the bounty from Allāh, and Allāh is sufficient as the All-Knowing.

4:71

O believers! Take your precautions ˹against the enemy˺. Then advance in separate groups or advance all together.

4:72

And indeed, there is among you one who would lag behind. If a disaster strikes you, he says, “Allāh has been gracious to me, for I was not present with them.”

4:73

But if a favour from Allāh befalls you, he will certainly say—as if there was no bond of affection between you and him—“Oh, I wish I had been with them, then I would have achieved a great success!”

4:74

So let those fight in the cause of Allāh who trade the life of this world for the Hereafter. And whoever fights in the cause of Allāh, and is killed or triumphs, We will grant them a magnificent reward.

4:75

And what is wrong with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allāh and for the oppressed among men, women, and children who cry out, “Our Lord! Deliver us from this city whose people are oppressors! Appoint for us a guardian from You, and appoint for us a helper from You!”

4:76

Those who believe fight in the cause of Allāh, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of false deities. So fight the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan is weak.

4:77

Have you not seen those who were told, “Hold back your hands ˹from fighting˺, establish prayer, and pay alms-tax”? Then, when fighting was ordained for them, a group of them feared people as they should have feared Allāh, or even more. They said, “Our Lord! Why have You ordained fighting for us? If only You had delayed it for a short time!” Say, “The enjoyment of this world is brief, and the Hereafter is far better for those mindful ˹of Allāh˺. And you will not be wronged by ˹even˺ the amount of a thread ˹inside a date seed˺.”

4:78

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you are in fortified towers. If something good happens to them ˹hypocrites˺, they say, “This is from Allāh,” but if something bad happens to them, they say, “This is from you ˹O Prophet˺.” Say, “All ˹things˺ are from Allāh.” What is the matter with these people that they can hardly understand a word?

4:79

Whatever good befalls you is from Allāh, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself. We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ as a Messenger to humanity. And sufficient is Allāh as a Witness.

4:80

Whoever obeys the Messenger has truly obeyed Allāh. And whoever turns away—We have not sent you ˹O Prophet˺ as a guardian over them.

Certainly. Here is Part 3: Verses 4:81 through 4:120 of Sūrat An-Nisā’ (The Women).

4:81

They say ˹publicly˺, “We obey,” but when they leave you ˹O Prophet˺, a group of them plot by night to do the opposite of what you said. But Allāh records whatever they plot. So turn away from them, and put your trust in Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as a Guardian.

4:82

Do they not then contemplate the Qur’ān? Had it been from anyone other than Allāh, they would have certainly found in it many inconsistencies.

4:83

When any news of ˹public˺ security or alarm comes to them, they instantly spread it. If they had referred it to the Messenger and to those in authority among them, then those ˹authorities˺ who can competently investigate would have learned the truth of the matter. Were it not for the grace of Allāh upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few.

4:84

So fight ˹O Prophet˺ in the cause of Allāh. You are responsible only for yourself. And motivate the believers ˹to fight˺. Perhaps Allāh will curb the might of the disbelievers. For Allāh is Greatest in might and Sternest in punishment.

4:85

Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have a share in its reward, and whoever intercedes for an evil cause will bear a share of its burden. And Allāh is over all things a Maintainer.

4:86

When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it, or ˹at least˺ return it equally. Surely Allāh is a careful Reckoner of everything.

4:87

Allāh—there is no god except Him. He will surely assemble you all on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And whose word is more truthful than Allāh’s?

4:88

What is the matter with you, having split into two groups regarding the hypocrites, while Allāh has set them back ˹to disbelief˺ because of what they earned? Do you wish to guide those whom Allāh has left astray? And whoever Allāh leaves astray, you will never find for him a way ˹to guidance˺.

4:89

They wish you would disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you may all be equal. So do not take them as allies until they emigrate in the cause of Allāh. If they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them. And do not take any of them as an ally or a helper—

4:90

except those who join a people with whom you have a treaty, or those who come to you with their hearts constrained from fighting you or fighting their own people. If Allāh had willed, He would have given them power over you, and they would have certainly fought you. So if they withdraw from you, do not fight you, and offer you peace, then Allāh has given you no way to ˹fight˺ them.

4:91

You will find others who wish to be safe from you and safe from their own people. Every time they are tempted to return to disbelief, they fall right into it. If they do not withdraw from you, and do not offer you peace, and do not restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them. Against those, We have given you a clear authority.

4:92

It is not lawful for a believer to kill another believer, unless it happens by mistake. And whoever kills a believer by mistake must free a believing slave and pay blood-money to the deceased's family, unless they forgo it out of charity. If the victim was from a hostile people but was a believer, then ˹the penalty is only˺ the freeing of a believing slave. If the victim was from a people with whom you have a treaty, then ˹the penalty is˺ blood-money to be handed over to their family and the freeing of a believing slave. But whoever cannot find ˹a slave to free˺ must fast for two consecutive months—a ˹means of˺ repentance ordained by Allāh. And Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

4:93

But whoever intentionally kills a believer, their recompense is Hell, where they will stay forever. Allāh is displeased with them, has cursed them, and has prepared for them a tremendous punishment.

4:94

O believers! When you travel to fight in the cause of Allāh, investigate carefully, and do not say to anyone who offers you peace ˹or a greeting of Islam˺, “You are not a believer,” seeking the fleeting gains of this worldly life. For Allāh has abundant gains. You yourselves were like them before, then Allāh conferred His favour upon you. So investigate carefully. Surely Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.

4:95

Not equal are the believers who stay at home—except those with physical disabilities—and those who strive in the cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives. Allāh has elevated the status of those who strive with their wealth and their lives over those who stay at home. Allāh has promised goodness to both, but Allāh has favoured the strivers over those who stay at home with a magnificent reward—

4:96

high ranks from Him, and forgiveness and mercy. And Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4:97

As for those whose souls the angels take while they are wronging themselves ˹by staying among disbelievers˺, the angels will ask, “What was your state ˹of faith˺?” They will reply, “We were oppressed in the land.” The angels will say, “Was Allāh’s earth not spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?” Their refuge will be Hell—what an evil destination!

4:98

Except for the truly oppressed men, women, and children who cannot devise a plan nor find a way ˹to escape˺.

4:99

It is they whom Allāh may well pardon. And Allāh is Ever-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.

4:100

Whoever emigrates in the cause of Allāh will find on the earth many safe havens and abundance. And whoever leaves their home, emigrating to Allāh and His Messenger, and death overtakes them—their reward is already secured with Allāh. And Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4:101

When you travel through the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer if you fear the disbelievers may persecute you. Indeed, the disbelievers are your obvious enemies.

4:102

And when you ˹O Prophet˺ are among them and lead them in prayer, let a group of them stand with you and retain their weapons. When they prostrate, let them go behind you, and let another group who have not prayed come forward and pray with you, taking their precautions and retaining their weapons. The disbelievers wish that you would be heedless of your weapons and belongings so they could launch a single, overwhelming attack on you. But there is no blame upon you if you lay down your weapons when hindered by rain or sickness. Nevertheless, take your precautions. Indeed, Allāh has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers.

4:103

Once you have finished the prayer, remember Allāh standing, sitting, and lying on your sides. But once you are safe, establish the prayer ˹as usual˺. Indeed, prayer is a prescribed duty for the believers at appointed times.

4:104

Do not falter in pursuing the enemy. If you are suffering, they are suffering just as you are. But you expect from Allāh what they do not expect. And Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

4:105

Indeed, We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book with the truth, so that you may judge between people by what Allāh has shown you. And do not be an advocate for the deceitful.

4:106

And ask Allāh for forgiveness. Surely Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4:107

And do not argue on behalf of those who betray themselves. Indeed, Allāh does not love whoever is a habitual betrayer, sinner.

4:108

They try to hide ˹their evil deeds˺ from people, but they cannot hide them from Allāh, for He is with them when they plot by night what is displeasing to Him in speech. And Allāh is All-Encompassing of what they do.

4:109

Ah, you are the ones who argue on their behalf in the life of this world. But who will argue with Allāh on their behalf on the Day of Resurrection? Or who will be their defender?

4:110

But whoever commits a sin or wrongs themself, and then seeks Allāh’s forgiveness, they will find Allāh All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4:111

And whoever commits a sin, only commits it against themself. And Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

4:112

And whoever commits a fault or a sin, then blames it on an innocent person, has certainly burdened themself with slander and a blatant sin.

4:113

Were it not for Allāh’s favour and mercy upon you ˹O Prophet˺, a group of them would have certainly attempted to mislead you. But they only mislead themselves, and they cannot harm you in the least. Allāh has revealed to you the Book and Wisdom, and has taught you what you did not know. And Allāh’s favour upon you has always been great.

4:114

There is no good in most of their secret talks, except for those who enjoin charity, or righteousness, or reconciliation among people. And whoever does this, seeking Allāh’s pleasure, We will grant them a magnificent reward.

4:115

And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to them and follows a path other than that of the believers—We will let them pursue what they have chosen and eventually enter them into Hell. What an evil destination!

4:116

Surely Allāh does not forgive association ˹of partners˺ with Him, but forgives anything else to whoever He wills. And whoever associates partners with Allāh has certainly gone far astray.

4:117

They ˹polytheists˺ invoke besides Him only female deities, and they invoke none but a rebellious Satan.

4:118

Allāh has cursed him ˹Satan˺, and he said, “I will surely take an appointed share of Your servants;

4:119

and I will certainly mislead them, and tempt them ˹with false hopes˺, and command them to slit the ears of cattle, and command them to tamper with Allāh’s creation.” And whoever takes Satan as a guardian instead of Allāh has certainly suffered a clear loss.

4:120

He ˹Satan˺ makes promises to them and fills them with false desires. But Satan promises them nothing but delusion.

Certainly. Here is Part 4: Verses 4:121 through 4:160 of Sūrat An-Nisā’ (The Women).

4:121

The refuge of these ˹followers of Satan˺ is Hell, and they will find no escape from it.

4:122

But those who believe and do good deeds—We will admit them into Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. This is the promise of Allāh, which is true. And whose word is more truthful than Allāh’s?

4:123

It will not be according to your ˹wishful˺ thinking, nor the wishes of the People of the Scripture. Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it, and will find none besides Allāh as a guardian or helper.

4:124

But whoever does good deeds, whether male or female, and is a believer, those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged by ˹even˺ the speck on a date-stone.

4:125

And who is better in religion than the one who submits their whole self to Allāh, while being a doer of good, and follows the religion of Abraham, the upright? And Allāh took Abraham as a close friend.

4:126

To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allāh is All-Encompassing of everything.

4:127

They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about women. Say, “Allāh gives you a ruling concerning them, and ˹so does˺ what is recited to you in the Book about the orphan women—whom you do not give what is ordained for them yet wish to marry—and about the oppressed children, and that you stand up for orphans with justice. Whatever good you do, Allāh is surely All-Knowing of it.”

4:128

If a woman fears ill-treatment or desertion from her husband, there is no blame upon either of them if they reconcile peacefully—and reconciliation is better. ˹Human˺ souls are naturally prone to greed. But if you do good and are mindful ˹of Allāh˺, then Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.

4:129

You will never be able to maintain perfect equality between women, however much you may desire to do so. So do not incline completely ˹to one˺ and leave the other as if suspended. But if you mend ˹your relations˺ and are mindful ˹of Allāh˺, then Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

4:130

But if they separate, Allāh will enrich each of them from His abundance. And Allāh is All-Encompassing, All-Wise.

4:131

To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you, and you ˹believers˺ as well, to be mindful of Allāh. But if you disbelieve, then ˹know that˺ to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And Allāh is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

4:132

To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allāh as a Guardian.

4:133

If He wills, He can do away with you, O humanity, and bring others ˹in your place˺. And Allāh is fully capable of doing that.

4:134

Whoever desires the reward of this world—then with Allāh is the reward of this world and the Hereafter. And Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

4:135

O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allāh, even if against yourselves, your parents, or your close relatives. Whether the person is rich or poor, Allāh is more worthy of both. So do not follow ˹personal˺ desires, for that would make you deviate. If you distort ˹the truth˺ or turn away, Allāh is certainly All-Aware of what you do.

4:136

O believers! Believe in Allāh and His Messenger, and the Book He has revealed to His Messenger, and the Scriptures He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allāh, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, has certainly gone far astray.

4:137

Indeed, those who believe, then disbelieve, then believe, then disbelieve, and increase in disbelief—Allāh will neither forgive them nor guide them to the ˹Right˺ Way.

4:138

Give the hypocrites the ‘good news’ that a painful punishment awaits them.

4:139

˹Hypocrites are˺ those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek honour and power from them? Indeed, all honour and power belong to Allāh.

4:140

He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear Allāh’s revelations being denied or mocked, you must not sit with them unless they engage in a different conversation. Otherwise, you would be just like them. Surely Allāh will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell.

4:141

˹Hypocrites are˺ those who wait for ˹a disaster to strike˺ you. If you achieve a victory from Allāh, they say, “Were we not with you?” But if the disbelievers prevail, they say ˹to them˺, “Did we not protect you and defend you from the believers?” Allāh will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection. And Allāh will never grant the disbelievers a way ˹to triumph˺ over the believers.

4:142

Indeed, the hypocrites try to deceive Allāh, but He is deceiving them. When they stand up for prayer, they do it lazily, only to be seen by people, and they hardly remember Allāh at all.

4:143

Wavering between this and that—neither belonging to these ˹believers˺ nor to those ˹disbelievers˺. And whoever Allāh leaves astray, you will never find for him a way ˹to guidance˺.

4:144

O believers! Do not take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allāh a clear proof against yourselves?

4:145

Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire, and you will find no helper for them.

4:146

Except those who repent, mend their ways, hold firmly to Allāh, and dedicate their faith sincerely to Allāh—these will be with the believers. And Allāh will grant the believers a magnificent reward.

4:147

Why would Allāh punish you if you are grateful and believe? And Allāh is All-Thankful, All-Knowing.
